Downtown Douglas Revitalization Plan
With the renovation of the historic Phelps Dodge Mercantile Building, the City of Douglas wanted to create a streetscape to support ongoing economic development and position the city as a southeast Arizona destination. The plan identifies three districts that reflect Douglas' unique history, culture, and economy. Because it is a border community, the plan includes recommendations to capture border-bound traffic from and to Mexico. The streetscape designs celebrate historic architecture along G Street, open the downtown to US 191 (the primary route to the Port of Entry). The plan includes strategies to prevent the downtown from being bypassed with the construction of a new, commercial Port of Entry. The plan was developed using unique public engagement techniques that engaged downtown merchants, town leaders, and residents.
